Outdoor Learning That Rebuilds Confidence, Behaviour & Engagement

If you're seeking alternative provision in Hampshire for students who find the traditional classroom experience too restrictive, The Outdoor Ed School offers outcomes-focused outdoor education that sparks engagement and rebuilds self-belief. Our dynamic outdoor learning for disengaged students is designed to transform behaviour, confidence, and wellbeing through genuine adventure and structured support.

How we help young people in alternative provision

At The Outdoor Ed School, we understand that behind every behaviour is a young person crying out for a different way to learn. Our alternative provision outdoor education is crafted for students whose needs aren't met by mainstream settings, those facing SEMH challenges, struggling with attendance, or at risk of falling behind. We deliver mobile activity days, progressive long-term programmes, and residential experiences, all designed to help students reconnect with learning and achieve visible progress, while giving them a taste of adventure many never get to experience in the city.

Every Activity Is a Tool for Real Growth

Our activities are more than just memorable days out; each one is a structured opportunity for personal development. By combining adventure-fuelled learning with proven behavioural strategies, we focus on SEMH and long-term success. Outdoor learning with us leads to:

  • Sharper focus and concentration in and out of the classroom
  • Stronger communication skills and respectful peer interaction
  • Better problem-solving and teamwork under real-life challenges
  • Increased responsibility, independence, and resilience
  • Greater self-confidence to try, struggle, succeed, and try again
  • Renewed respect, for themselves, for others, for their potential
  • Skills that underpin not just reintegration, but lasting success in school and beyond

Every programme at The Outdoor Ed School is purposeful, outcomes-led, and personally designed for students who need alternative provision in Hampshire that really works.

How We Do It: Our Six-Step Framework

For the past five years, we've developed and refined a specialist alternative education provider approach, underpinned by measurable outcomes, safeguarding, and rooted in genuine engagement:

Step 1: Information Gathering (The Deep Dive)

We start by getting to know each student: their triggers, strengths, interests, and the gap between where they are and where they need to be, building a personalised plan for support.

Step 2: Engagement
(Creating Buy-In)

Activities are picked deliberately to spark curiosity and energy. Building trust is key, students feel safe, listened to, and understood, lowering resistance.

Step 3: Little Wins
(Learning by Stealth)

Sixteen exciting activities, from orienteering and archery to bushcraft and zorb football, build focus, confidence and skills naturally, often before students realise they're learning.

Step 4: Big Wins (Activity Selection & Qualifications)

We track progress, celebrate achievements, and introduce structured sessions that can lead to nationally recognised qualifications, building pride and motivation.

Step 5: Identify the Hero
(Vision Building)

Students develop their own “hero” identity, exploring values, communication, and moral goals, shaping who they want to become.

Step 6: Become the Hero
(Holistic Development)

The focus turns to putting this vision into action: increasing focus, improving behaviour, boosting attendance, achieving qualifications, and building readiness for reintegration.
